Portion Distortion – Do you know what a portion actually is?

We Have Portion Distortion Now-a-days!

Just this past weekend, we had bought strawberries one from a local farm market and some from the grocery store.  The store ones were huge and beautiful looking.  The local strawberries were tiny and cute with all kinds of shapes and bumps.  Although, the store bought ones were pretty to look at guess which ones are probably better for you???

What Is A Serving Size?

Below are the amounts of food that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recommending you eat.

When you go to a restaurant, typically your plate contains anywhere from 3 to 4 servings!!

Go to your kitchen.  Pull out the measuring cups and measuring spoons.  Take a look at what a half a cup looks like or 8 oz cup. Look up your favorite foods and see what a serving size actually is!

  • Lean Protein—3 oz of meat is about the size of a deck of cards
  • Starches—a medium potato is the size of a computer mouse
  • Fibrous Vegetables—size varies on type of vegetable—usually 2 fist full’s
  • Fruits—1 cup of fruit is the size of a baseball
  • Fats– 1 Tablespoon is about the size of your thumb.

Now, compare that to what you are normally eating.
