Today on the Shape It up Over 40 podcast, I am going to talk about who you want to be when you are at your ideal weight or in your ideal physique.

Be. Do. Become. for weight loss
Alright so let’s talk about Be. Do. Become. There is another version of this that is Be. Do. Have. But as far as weight loss I really like the idea of “become”.
I am always aiming to level myself up to become a new improved version of me. For me it’s like getting updates on a regular basis. I have been working on stepping into this new version of me for some time now and I want you to know that this whole leveling up thing is a process. It’s a similar process that I do with my clients.
Because if you are not happy with the body you have right now…you are looking to level up …to get an update…to become a better version of you.
This doesn’t mean the current version of you is wrong or bad or anything like that, It’s just you want more….and I truly believe that is what we are meant to do with our time on planet earth…make an impact in peoples lives and keep impacting your own life.
So, when you are starting to become aware that you aren’t happy with the body you have ..you start envisioning what you do want …what kind of body you want to live in. What kind of clothes you would like to be wearing. Maybe some activities you would like to be trying…like surfing…or hiking…or even just traveling and being able to walk and keep up with the people you are traveling with.
This envisioning of newer you is where you get to dream about what you look like as that learner version of you….but you need to take it a step further…you need to know what that new version of you feels like and what does she think…then what does she do. You need to BE her.
Once you have really honed in of what it is like to BE her then you go into the DO. What does this upleveled version of you do. Now the DO part, most people automatically go to the workout and some diet….If you have to “force” yourself or “make” yourself do something that you can’t do long term you will never get that new version of you…I am referring to dieter’s mentality. Sacrifice and will power are not sustainable which is why I teach my clients a totally different approach to how to eat and how to move your body.
If you are kinda lost or confused at this point hang with me I have a perfect analogy coming up that will make this much clearer…
So, once you figure out the DO part…then after implementing, practicing, failing, tweaking and reimplementing you will become the new version of you.
Most women that come to me are approaching it backwards…they desperately want the weight loss and are hyper focused on why they don’t have it yet (the BECOME part) and then they tell me all the DO’s they are attempting and they aren’t even aware of the BE part of the equation.
Analogy Of Be. Do. Become.
So here is my analogy to tie this all together for you…
As you all know I grew up in the ballet studio. And every year, the dance studio did The Nutcracker. In our version of The Nutcracker, the lead role was Clara. When I was 11 years old, I wanted to dance the lead role of Clara. And when I say “wanted” it was like there was no other option for me. I was going to dance that role. In my mind, I was so determined \ I would dance that part. I don’t think I told anybody else that I was desiring that role which was probably a good thing because I do not remember anyone deterring me from it…Kinda like when you declare that you are going to lose weight and you tell someone about it and they interject their opinion…”are you sure you want to do that again. Remember the last time you tried to lose weight” or some version of that.
We also do this to ourselves!!
That little voice that wants to keep us right where we are starts talking to us….I am grateful that at the age of 11, that voice was nowhere to be heard.
- I was relentless with wanting this role.
- Super focused on getting the part.
- I watched the current Clara dance the part.
- Watched VHS tapes (yes that’s how old I am) of the performances.
- Learned the choreography.
- I would push the furniture out of the way in our family room and pretend it was the stage.
- I would use my mom’s stationary bike as my “partner” in the pas de deux part.
- Listen The Nutcracker record over and over.
- I made costumes to practice in.
- I had a Nutcracker doll that I would dance with.
- I would think about how I would play the part of Clara.
- I was BEING Clara.
- I was DOING the actions that would get me closer to my goal of dancing that part.
My dance teacher had no idea this was in my mind. I wasn’t getting outside validation or encouragement to keep going. I was driven from inside of me all because I desired to have something.
Be and Do…then Become.
So, I was in the BE and DO part and it wasn’t until 2 years later that I would BECOME Clara. I would dance that role. Not only did I dance it once, but I was picked for the role 2 years in a row which at that time was rare. I had BECOME Clara…I had BECOME the person I needed to be to dance that role.
This what you need to do to BECOME the leaner, healthier version you want to become. You need to adopt new ways of thinking about you. You need to feel what it is like to be that new version of you…like deep in your soul feeling. You need to KNOW that you WILL become that new version of you. And for no other reason than why the hell not! Why not be the best version of you that you can be! Why not live in the body that you love!
I work with my clients on what is getting in their way of becoming this new leaner version. We unlearn a lot of doubts and limiting beliefs. We dive into the BE part because what I find is most women that come to me think they know who they want to BE but when we go deeper we find out that they have a different truth for themselves. We take action in the DO part. But you have to BE the person before you can DO. And I take my clients through the process of not just BECOMING the person they want to be but teach them how to sustain that new version and continue to grow into an ever-evolving person.
