Is Your Mental Muscle Activated?
When you think about getting in shape do you tend to think about how you want to look? “I can’t wait until my arms stop wiggling underneath” or “I can’t wait until my butt gets rounder and more lifted”. But what you really need to focus in on first is your mental muscle.
What is your mental muscle?
Your mental muscle is your brain! But not just your “brain” but your mindset.
Mindset is VITALLY important for you to achieve your fitness goals! If you are a woman who is around the age of 40 (either side of the 40) … your mindset needs to be rock solid!
It is sooo easy to be lazy. To have things handed to us. Or to procrastinate on doing it tomorrow. Well, it’s time to flex your mental muscle TODAY!
My Top Tips for Flexing Your Mental Muscle
Stop With The Participation Trophies
Do you feel like you are constantly looking for outside validation? I know from my past, being a ballet dancer, you just prayed the director would look your way. Waiting to hear anything good or bad from them because if you got attention you were standing out.
Don’t get me wrong …DO celebrate the little victories but do you constantly need a friend to pat you on the back for every little thing you do? It’s like the new driver whose parents bought them a car verses the new driver who worked long hours to earn the money to buy themselves the car. It could be the biggest piece of junk car but they earned it. They endured hours of flexing their mental muscle so they could have the reward of getting that car.
We want things yesterday and nothing worth having comes easy, does it? I know I am probably going to tick off some people with the next couple of words…. but why does every kid need a participation trophy?? It’s not like that in the adult world. You don’t get a bonus because you clocked in every day. You get bonuses when you go above and beyond what you are expected to do.
Why are we settling for mediocrity?
I don’t want to be average. I don’t want my kids to be average.
You aren’t going to excel in everything but if you are giving it all you got then that is where the real reward comes in.
Your self-worth ties into the participation trophy…. Let’s say you didn’t win first place. Are you going to let that destroy all hope of ever winning OR are you going to use that as fire to increase your mental muscle so the next time you will get first place (and it might not be the next time it might be many times after).
To increase your mental muscle, you need to know what makes you tick.
- Why do you do the things you do?
- Are you constantly in reaction mode?
- Do you fly off the handle in certain situations?
- Do you feel “less than” when you are in certain conversations?
- Be aware of how you react to people and situations. Channel those emotions so you can control your reactions and not the other way around.
Have No Limits
“Have no limits” is part of my Shape It Up tagline and my part of my personal creed for living life. In order to flex your mental muscle, you need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Step out of your comfort zone.
It’s doesn’t have to be something as big as sky diving. It could be just starting an exercise program or trying a new vegetable.
Fear is what is holding you back.
Fear comes from not knowing the outcome. No one knows the outcome and you will never find out unless you try and see it all the way through until the end.
Do not fear change. If you aren’t changing, you aren’t living. Never stop learning and growing.
Take Control Of Your Mind
We become what we think of most!
What are those little thoughts rummaging through your brain
I don’t know where I heard this…probably a fortune cookie (lol)
“You can’t stop a bird from landing on your head, but you can keep it from building a nest.”
Everyone has a “Negative Nellie” in their head. But you can choose whether you want to listen to her.
What are your self -limiting beliefs?
Do you believe you will always be heavy because it’s in your genes?
Do you believe you can never lose weight and be healthy ad fit because none of your family is??
Is all this REALLY true???
I know plenty of people who swore it was genetics only to find out they just weren’t using their mental muscle.
Focus Your Energy
To be mentally strong, you need to focus your physical and mental energy. Olympians don’t rely on just talent to get them the gold medal. They practice (click here for more on mental toughness). They don’t just go through the motions.
Here are some basics on how Athletes tackle their goals:
- Goals are broken down into manageable chunks
- They focus on improving their mistakes
- Rely on feedback and make the adjustments needed
- Ditch their ego
- Aim to master their goals
- Learn and enjoy the process not just the end result.
Be The Forever Student
Constantly learning new things will flex your mental muscle. It doesn’t matter where you are starting from. There are many smart and talented people who give up when it gets tough. And there are many poor and uneducated people who thrive. When the going gets tough the tough get going!
Take Home Points:
- Mental toughness can be learned.
- Never stop learning.
- Mistakes are learning opportunities.
- Have no limits to what you can accomplish
- Earn it! Earn your rewards. They are so much more satisfying.
